Please join us for an exclusive opportunity to experience nature and give back to the community with the Friends of Ballona Wetlands, all while networking with the LAX Coastal Young Professionals!
The Friends of Ballona Wetland's Beginner Bird Watching and Creek Clean-Up has two parts:
First, the Friends staff and docent will lead the group on a bird watching tour through the Ballona Wetlands Ecological Reserve--first to the observation deck and then through the dunes to Ballona Creek. Along the way you'll hope to see several species of birds as you walk through different habitats (nature willing). In the wetlands sections ducks, coots, egrets, herons, gulls, terns and the endangered Belding's Savannah sparrow often appear. In the uplands and dunes we'll find sparrows, finches, gnatcatchers, Towhees, hummingbirds, Yellowthroats and others. Overhead we may see hawks and ospreys. More than 200 species of birds come through the reserve each year, but you never know what you'll see on a Saturday morning.
Afterwards, at Ballona Creek, your group will assist the community and our ocean by picking up trash along the banks that wash downstream from the LA River, stopping it before it washes into the ocean. This is an important community volunteer project. Sadly, it's remarkable how much trash comes through the poorly-designed LA River system.
The Friends will provide binoculars for birdwatching and gloves and garbage bags for the creek cleanup. Attendees should wear running shoes or hiking boots and bring protection from the sun (sunscreen and a hat). It's best to dress in layers as the temperature changes pretty quickly.
